The Beat Cancer Campaign
Shugart Charitable Fund
This time of year, many of us observe an unofficial no-shave November. Sometimes, it turns into “Don’t-Shave December”, and maybe even “Shave Not Until Spring!” While we have a lot of fun not shaving, comparing beards, and generally giving each other a hard time, what we’re really after is for someone to ask us why we’re observing such an occasion. According to the National Cancer Institute, by the end of 2021, approximately 1.9 million people will be diagnosed with cancer, and over 600,000 people will die. In November, we don’t shave to draw attention to the fact that cancer is the second leading cause of death in the US today. I enjoy not shaving for a few weeks each year, but this year, as a cancer survivor married to a cancer survivor, it’s time to put our money where our mouth is. Angela and I are launching a campaign, The Beat Cancer Campaign, to raise money for cancer awareness and research, and on this Giving Tuesday, we are inviting you to join us in this effort. As an inducement for you to participate with us, we will match the first $500 donated to this campaign. The charity we have chosen to support this year is the Mike Slive Foundation for Prostate Cancer Research. Mike was, among other notable things, the commissioner of the Southeastern Conference from 2002 to 2015. Following his own battle with prostate cancer, he started his foundation after his retirement to fund prostate cancer awareness and research. Mike ultimately lost his battle with prostate cancer in 2018. We have chosen B Charitable as the platform to handle all donations to the campaign. B Charitable is a charitable entity started by our son, Jonathan Shugart. It is a 501(c)(3) service that brings strategies like donor advised funds, previously available to only the wealthy, to the average contributor. You do not have to join to participate. However, if you do sign up with B Charitable, they will match the first $25 of your donation. So, with all matches applied, your tax-deductible $25 donation can become $75, your $50 becomes $125, and your $100 donation can be worth $250! So, please join us; together we can beat cancer. Also, please include your friends and social media contacts. You can forward this email, or click on the campaign link above to share with your social media followers. Thank you for joining us as we take one step closer to finding a cure to this terrible disease. We will keep this campaign active from now through the month of December.

Awake Community School Unenrolled Student Support
Bagwell Family Fund
Hello All, Awake Community School is an incredible private school in Titusville, AL that Sarah and I have grown to love. They provide a family centered, multicultural, and safe environment for students to thrive as they learn. Support for the school comes from Scholarship Granting Organization like "Scholarship for Kids", Private Donations, and Tuition paid by families who attend. Awake currently has 8 students who deeply desire to attend school there this year but were not enrolled in time to receive scholarship support and will not be able to attend without help. Would you consider helping us support these neighbors this year.

Honoring Ifay Chang's Commitment to Education
jchang504
Ifay was deeply committed to education, civic engagement, and community life. He proudly served for many years as a Trustee of the Somers Central School District, where he brought thoughtful analysis, intellectual rigor, and a strong belief in the value of public education. He also taught at the Northern Westchester Chinese School, sharing Chinese language, culture, history, and philosophy with younger generations. His interests and activities were centered around a belief in lifelong learning, social connection, and keeping the mind active at every stage of life. Memorial donations in honor of Ifay will be distributed by his family to educational institutions that he loved and contributed to, such as National Cheng Kung University in Taiwan and Somers High School. Please note that the platform (B Charitable) suggests a tip to support their services, but this is NOT required. Feel free to set the tip to 0. You will receive a tax receipt from B Charitable via email.

Hub in the Hills: Giving Tuesday
Will and Ammie Akin Charitable Fund
Hub in the Hills is restoring the former Vestavia Hills Central Elementary School campus into a place where purpose finds a home. This historic space will bring together mission-driven partners — Unless U, serving adults with special needs; Alabama GameChangers, supporting children who learn differently; and Redemption Hill Church, walking with families through discipleship and care. Each will operate in dedicated, secure spaces while benefiting from the broader environment the Hub creates. Beyond these partner organizations, the campus will feature shared common areas — a café, workspaces, meeting rooms, and creative spaces — designed for purpose-driven nonprofits, small businesses, and individuals who want a place to gather, learn, collaborate, and make a difference. These shared spaces extend the impact far beyond any single organization. We are committed to opening the campus debt-free, allowing us to offer deeply reduced rent and keep resources focused on redemptive impact instead of overhead. Thanks to generous donors and partners, we’ve already secured $4.5 million in donations and low-interest impact loans. Our Giving Tuesday goal is an important step, but it does not complete the full project cost. Your support helps bring this vision closer to reality. Every gift moves us forward. Join us in building tomorrow. Hub in the Hills is where purpose finds a home.

New Hope Wall Prject
Bagwell Family Fund
Family and Friends, Sarah and I have been supporting a girls’ boarding school in Tanzania called Tumaini Jipya (“New Hope”). The school provides a safe place for girls to get their education in a region where nearly 1 in 4 girls ages 15–19 become pregnant before finishing school. We recently received an update about the girls and a project to complete a security fence around the campus. After reading it, we felt led to help. If you’d be interested in learning more or potentially joining us in giving, here’s the update and video: https://mediazilla.com/JuBBFer1XG No pressure at all but wanted to get this opportunity out to as many in my network that also feel led to give as I could.

Carver Jones Market
billy
Clerestory exists to provide rehabilitative and developmental opportunities for folks moving out of crisis (addiction, poverty, abuse, etc) in the form of vocational, educational, residential, and community-building initiatives. This campaign will specifically support our Carver Jones Market initiative in Fairfield, Alabama. Fairfield, Alabama, located next to the city of Birmingham, Alabama, is a “food desert” in that there are no grocery or other retail establishments in the entire city selling fresh meat and/or produce. Carver Jones will address a huge need in the community for fresh, quality food, as well as the need for life and vitality in the middle of downtown Fairfield. The store will also provide jobs to local high school students and will provide critical job training and development. Construction is underway and approximately half of the funds needed have been raised! "Not merely to exist, but to really live. That’s the goal at CARVER JONES. We are here — in this place and at this time — to experience and provide more than the things we sell. This is about seeing individuals and families thrive. It’s about watching communities come together around the potential of what progress can bring..." Eat good. Live well. Be better.

Maya's Spark Fund 2022
James Charitable Fund
Maya was a beautiful girl. She took so much joy out of the everyday things: music, dogs, water, reading, and ipads. She was fun-loving, affectionate, and mischievous. She knew how to love and loved her family and school team deeply and well. People were important to her. She would find an “in” with a person and then just work it. You couldn’t help but love and laugh with Maya. She had challenges. She had significant medical issues, from her heart to her kidneys to her ears and her eyes. She had significant educational issues, still learning to count to 20 and learning how to read. Her being low verbal meant she had significant social issues as well. Being her mother meant coordinating doctor appointments, therapy appointments, and meetings with her educational team. It meant seeking out educational opportunities for me and social experiences for her. She had an amazingly positive attitude. Maya never anticipated disaster. She walked in fresh to each new experience. Maya passed away unexpectedly in April of 2021 ultimately from a complication from a surgery she had on day 2 of her life. She was 15 years old. We started Maya’s Spark fund to keep her legacy alive by supporting access to the programs that gave her (and our whole family) so much! The Maya’s Spark Fund had an incredibly successful campaign last year. We were able to raise over $24,000 last year. This allowed us to support access to so many of the programs that made such a difference in our lives. We made significant contributions to: Adam’s Camp New England Best Buddies Camp Communicate at the Pine Tree Society David’s House Down syndrome - Autism connection NAPA center NH Leadership Zebra Crossings Please help us continue her legacy! We are relaunching our campaign to fundraise for her fund on 3/21 -- World Down Syndrome day! We will gift again on her birthday in November. Be sure to watch the video and learn more about her and our mission.

Cliff Place Cares
Shugart Charitable Giving Fund
We've been working hard to simplify charitable giving with our new platform, B Charitable. A big THANK YOU to everyone that has signed up, made contributions and provided feedback. We have a challenge and an invitation for our friends, family and neighbors. Some families from Cliff Place have selected six local charities to benefit from a crowdfunding campaign called Cliff Place Cares. All contributions are eligible for a 50% match from one of our organizers, and each donor will receive a charitable contribution receipt for their donation. So if you give $1, your donation will grow to $1.50 after the match. Through grants to the following charities: Children’s Hospital of Alabama, Community Foodbank of Central Alabama, Magic City Woodworks, Neverthirst, Big Oak Ranch, and Lifeline, this campaign will provide 4,000 meals to hungry children in Central Alabama, dig a well in India that will provide clean water for 18-20 families, provide 3 months of living expenses for a teen needing a chance, teach life skills to 10 orphaned and vulnerable children, teach a trade and life skills to marginalized men, and provide access to world class healthcare for children of Alabama after our goal of $13,100 is reached. Together, we can make a greater impact in the lives of others. I’m excited to see our community rally together and support some amazing causes. Thank you for your generosity in helping others. Please help grow our community's impact by liking, sharing, tagging your neighbors, and commenting on this post.
